How Much Does a Custom Steel Bike Frame Weigh?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions I receive, both online and in my workshop. Here is a clear and detailed answer:
- The material affects the final weight.
- Weight isn’t everything: there are heavy bikes that have achieved great results… and light bikes that disappoint.
It’s true: a light frame helps on climbs. But do you really want to judge your bike by its weight alone?
If the answer is “yes,” know that to have the lightest frame you need to choose carbon. It is the lightest material currently available in cycling.

How Much Does a Top Carbon Frame Weigh?
It all depends:
- Expensive frames use advanced carbon, both light and strong.
- Cheaper models often compromise on safety.
- On average, a carbon frame weighs about 1 kg.
Carbon frames have fixed geometries and generic sizes (S, M, L, XL), not ideal for those seeking a perfect fit.
And a Custom Steel Frame?
A high-quality steel frame weighs about 1.4–1.5 kg. That’s about 400-500 grams more than top carbon frames.
But keep in mind: each frame is unique and the weight varies based on your size and needs.
With a handcrafted frame, you have the freedom to customize every detail: geometry, style, cable routing… it’s a whole different riding philosophy.
Is It Worth It?
Ask yourself these questions:
- How much do those extra 400-500 grams really matter?
- How important is customization to you?
- Do you want a bike made specifically for you?
It’s like choosing between a tailored suit and an off-the-rack branded garment.
I can only offer you my experience and the opportunity to choose a custom steel frame.
