This morning I woke up late. Looking out of the window I saw a decent day and decided not to let it slip away, even though I had little time. So I went for a short but high-intensity ride, sure that a hard spin would make peace between me and the day.
As I rode, the cool wind on my skin gave me a sense of freedom, and every bend seemed to invite me to push a little further. But on a bend in the shade everything changed in the blink of an eye: the bike suddenly slipped, and in a split second I found myself "hugging" the tarmac.
The consequences of the fall
The impact was hard. I had grazes all down my right side: ankle, hip, pelvis and shoulder all bore the marks of the fall. On top of that, the whiplash from my head strained the muscles of my neck and shoulder, oddly enough on the opposite side to the one I fell on.
It was an intense moment, full of pain and confusion, but in the chaos one thing was clear: the helmet had done its job. Looking at it after the crash, I could see how crucial it had been to wear it. The picture speaks for itself:

Why a helmet matters
Thinking about what happened, I can't help reflecting on how often we underestimate the importance of a helmet. Most likely, if I hadn't been wearing it, the consequences would have been much more serious. A simple object, often seen as optional or a nuisance, turned out to be a real lifesaver.
A helmet is not just an accessory: it is a barrier that protects us in unexpected moments. No matter how experienced or careful we are, the unexpected can always happen, and a properly fastened helmet can make the difference between a nasty fright and a tragedy.
Today's lesson
Today I learned a precious lesson, not only about safety but about life. Even a day that seems ordinary can hold surprises, good or bad, and it is up to us to face them with the right equipment and the right mindset.
I want to share this experience with all of you, not to look for sympathy, but as a reminder of how important it is to look after your safety, especially in a sport we love like cycling. Never forget to wear your helmet, and enjoy every ride, knowing that a small gesture like fastening that strap can make a big difference.
I wish you all to keep riding with passion and safely. May the wind always be at your back, and may every bend be an opportunity, not a danger. 🚴♂️
Happy 2025!
